Public interest cemeteries are non-profit facilities for the burial of ashes led by government that aim at satisfying the basic burial needs of the masses of the people，while saving land resources. Certain problems exist in public interest cemeteries of Anhui Province regarding aspects such as numbers，planning，construction land，and cemetery management. The problems are rooted in the contradictions between traditional burial customs and funeral reforms，between land demands for cemetery construction and limited land resources，and between market environment and its nature of public interest. To promote the benign operation and coordinated development of public interest cemeteries，governments need to improve policies and regulation，increase investments and strengthen management；departments for cemetery management need to promote land-saving ecological burial and increase funeral services；and society and individuals need to transform funeral concepts and change burial customs.
