<<Adgar Allan Poe is commonly regarded as the father of detective fiction. His detective trilogy feature his amateur investigator Dupin who is deeply influenced by the belief of transcendentalism that people are at their best when truly “self-reliant” and independent. Transcendentalism emphasizes subjective intuition, authority and individual divinity. Hence,Dupin is contemptuous of all the outside authority and traditions and creates the mysteries intentionally, which is the positive part in modern society. In the meantime,as a mortal being,Dupin has inevitably accepted the social values in his time. Hence, when finding the solutions of the cases, his actions have produced the disconcerting story of transgression; Therefore,Dupin may seem to eradicate the mysteries, but he nevertheless leaves the readers in their questioning of “humanity and transgressive behavior”.
