<<Macao has focused its protection of the historic city mostly on well-known historic or cultural old buildings or blocks, while ignoring the reproduction or reconstruction of the larger number and wider range of ordinary old buildings and the surrounding environment. The ruins of Tang Garden, located on Avenida do Coronel Mesquita, were included in the list of cultural relicsin the 1980s,but were later removed. Only the garden wall and part of the buildings remain till today. Instituto Cultural de Macau(ICM,the Cultural Institute of Macao)wants to preserve the wall, while Conselho do Planeamento Urbanistico(CPU,the Council of Urban Planning)suspects the “remaining wall” will be in conflict with urban development. Through research on the historical and current situations and by means of environmental design, the paper proposes several solutions to space revitalization to enable both preservation and development.
