2016年是冲绳基地斗争史上具有标志性意义的一年。在县知事翁长雄志的带领下，冲绳县民展开了轰轰烈烈的诉讼斗争、基地受害斗争和选举斗争。冲绳基地斗争不仅在一定程度上影响了日本的政治生态，有效延缓了边野古新基地建设的进程，影响了美军在冲绳的军事部署，而且迫使日美两国政府就《日美地位协定》适用范围的重新界定进行谈判，对日美同盟和美国的亚太战略产生了重要影响。
2016年は沖縄基地闘争史上において象徴的な意義をもつ一年である。沖縄県民は、翁長雄志県知事の指揮の下、すさまじい訴訟闘争、基地被害闘争及び選挙闘争を展開した。それはある程度日本政治生態にのみならず、辺野古新基地の建設を遅らせて沖縄における米軍の配置にも影響を与えた。日米両政府は日米地位協定の適用範囲の見直しを迫られて、日米同盟や米国のアジア太平洋戦略にも重要な影響を及ぼした。
