Objective to objectively evaluate the comprehensive competitiveness of private hospitals. Methods according to ICD-10 and ICD-9-CM-3 classification，medical services，quality and efficiency in ten third-tier general private hospitals and ten public hospitals with comparable sizes were analyzed for comparison. Results compared to public hospitals，private hospitals had poor medical quality，but had higher efficiency. Conclusion medical quality is the main reason for the gap between private hospitals and public hospitals.
