Gender mainstreaming was clearly established as a global strategy for promoting gender equality in the Platform for Action adopted at the United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women, held in Beijing in 1995. It highlighted the necessity to ensure that gender equality is a primary goal in all area(s)of social and economic development. The Women’s Commission of Hong Kong has been pursuing gender mainstreaming in all areas and at all levels, especially in the design and implementation of government policies, since it was established in 2001. This commission has effectively advanced gender equality and sustainable development in Hong Kong. This method of promoting gender equality is a useful reference for the strengthening and improvement of the national mechanism for promoting gender equality in China.
