<<This paper tries to depict the current state of China studies at Harvard University as featured by the publications and public speeches offered by prominent Harvard scholars in this field during the past two years, such as the historical review of China studies made by Vogel, the research on income disparity and its potential to ignite social conflicts done by White,Perry’s endeavour to trace the idea of “rights” in Chinese historical archives,Watson’s updated fieldwork on lineages, village life, migration, and MacDonald in New Territories, and the cross-disciplinary study of Kleinman that combines medicine, anthropology, and psychology. The remarkable contributions made by the faculty and the vibrant academic culture consisting of a wide range of intellectual activities (e.g.HYI Lunch Talk) and courses jointly move China study gradually from margin to the core of Harvard’s intellectual map. In conclusion, the author observes that there are four trends in Harvard’s China study:the rise of interdisciplinary approach, the rise of anthropology, the replacement of intelligence analysis and China policy research by genuinely intellectual pursuit, and the increasing attention paid to the social reforms in China.
