Based on the result of the “5th census” and the “1% ［of the total population］ survey”（2005）conducted by the National Statistical Bureau，this paper analyzes the structure of social stratification in today’s Shanghai. It argues that the structure of social stratification in Shanghai today still takes a pyramid shape despite the fact that Shanghai’s economy has already reached the average level of moderately developed countries. Economic development has not brought about a compatible social stratification structure. The reason for this is that a large amount of deprived labors thrust into Shanghai due to the speedy urbanization and the polarization in income distribution throughout the entire China. Hence，there is still a long way to go for the structure of social stratification in Shanghai to become an oval shape. Certainly，it will definitely take even longer time for the structure of social stratification of the whole country to be modernized.
