<<Inspired by the outbreak of the refugee crisis in 2015 and the public discussions about Muslim immigrants in recent years in Germany, this paper set the public intellectual Navid Kermani as an example to analyze the collective anxiety of German Society which appeared to be focused on the immigrants and refugees, but actually on the historical topos of “German identity”. Kermani deconstructs the so-called purity of Germaneness from the periphery and declares otherness and foreignness to the essential conditions of the German culture. Furthermore,to construct an identity discourse does not mean patriotism automatically because self-identification through exclusion of others hardly differs from the discourse of nationalism,to which the German people should be alert especially. Having the experiences of his own family as immigrants,Kermani works out that the general base of the German identity is out of the concept of “Verfassungspatriotismus”(Constitutional patriotism),i.e. to respect and defend the “Grundgesetz”(Basic Law). Only the country that is formed according to the spirit of the Basic Lawdeserves the patriotic love of the German people.
