The oceans of Southeast Asia represent the highways of historical Asian trade and exchange. They are also the graveyards of those ships that sank en-route to their destinations. There was a ninth-century shipwreck located off Belitung Island in the western Java Sea,laden with a cargo of some 60,000 trade goods,especially the ceramics. It contained the richest and largest consignment of early ninth-century Chinese trade ceramics ever found and showed the key period for the commercialization of China’s ceramic export industry.
