In March 2014 the independent candidate Andrej Kiska was elected as Slovakia’s President after defeating the incumbent PM Fico in the second round of voting. Due to his involvement in the scandal of overpriced medical equipment tender,the Parliamentary Chairman Paska resigned from his post by pressure. The Slovak economy developed smoothly in 2014,but it was still troubled by an unemployment rate of 14%. Slovakia was ready to help Ukraine in the latter’s EU accession process and held pragmatic attitudes towards its relationship with Russia. Fico accepted the invitation by Chinese PM Li Keqiang and would visit China in 2015.
