Since plant biotechnology was introduced into world agriculture,it has incited a wide debate on its potential risks for human health, environment versus its expected benefits for farmers and consumers. At the same time, the global area of GM crops has sharply increased with 583 percent from 1.7 million hectares in 1996 to 81.0 million hectares in 2004.Notably,more than 27.6 million hectares of the global area of GM crops was grown in developing countries which absolute growth(7.2 million hectares)was higher than industrialized countries(6.1 million hectares))in 2004. In these developing countries,China cultivated GM crops(mainly consisting of Bt cotton)at the area of 3.7 million hectares in 2004.It is obviously that China plays an important role in Genetically Modified(GM)crops planting in the world after initializing biotechnology research from mid1980s.
