To Change China：The Rockefeller Foundation’s Century-long Journey in China offers us a comprehensive overview of the experiences of the Rockefeller Foundation spanning a century in China. Through this subject matter the book also develops to become an academic treatise on Chinese cultural exchange with the West. The book draws on the spread of Western medicine in China and the projects of the Rockefeller Foundation in China as historical examples through which to explore cultural exchange，clashes and fusion between China and the West；to study the social history of Chinese and Western medicine and the history of the development of American foundations；and from the perspective of a foreign NPO in China，it analyzes the efforts of a Western NPO during the process of becoming involved in and striving to change China. We can understand the foundations and the charitable pursuits that form the content of this book in four different ways：the first is to see foundations as improving the lives of the poor through philanthropy；the second is to see modern foundations as using their funding to spread knowledge and culture and to remold society；the third is to see the Rockefeller Foundation as promoting the spread of Western medicine in China through philanthropy；and the fourth is to see American foundations as using their funding to build relationships between China and the USA.
