President Colom’s political foundation does not seem firm enough for him to avoid facing severe challenges from both within and outside the party. The Murder of Lawyer Rodrigo Rosenberg dragged the country into a political crisis. Due to its weak control in parliament,the new government found it difficult to get various law bills approved to promote relevant reforms. The country’s economy started to suffer from the international financial crisis since 2008 and reported the first recession in 2009 of the past 20 years as counter-crisis measures adopted by the government at the beginning of the years produced limited results,agricultural output losses were translated into famine,domestic consumption and investment shrank,construction,tourism and other industries slumped,more people lost jobs,exports and remittance decreased,currency depreciated,government revenue diminished and fiscal deficit expanded. Violent crime became rampant and poverty was spreading. With regard to international relations,the domestic political crisis in May caught worldwide attention,its relations with the US were affected by the issue of immigration,and ties with neighbor countries were improved. However,Honduras coup put Central America’s stability in uncertainties.
