Both the U.S. and Canada are developed countries that are made up of immigrants. Students across the world flock to the U.S. to study, partly because the U.S. owns world-class universities, partly because of its cultural tradition of freedom, diversity and tolerance. Students are also drawn to the U.S. by its open policies in talent, as well as the importance it attaches to R&D investment. Though the number of foreign students it attracts is lower than its neighbor, Canada remains a popular study abroad destination country, thanks to the favorable policies initiated by the Canadian government to draw foreign students. This study mainly reviews the current situation of international students in the U.S. and Canada, with a focus on Chinese students in these two countries.
