Food safety is an important issue of public health security. Based on the analysis of collective food poisoning information and food contaminant monitoring data from 2005 to 2008 in Shanghai，trends and characteristics of food safety events in Shanghai was studied. Within the next few years food safety situation is not optimistic in Shanghai. Collective food-borne diseases will continue to have a certain level of occurrence，and will occur from May to October in a high probability，and most caused by bacteria. The detection rate of food borne pathogenic bacteria in food was 12.9%. Pesticide and veterinary residues are still serious，and the dangers of food poisoning induced by Clenbuterol was existed. The phenomenon of abuse of additives in food was still existed. Environment of food production brought risk of food safety. Risks of food safety were existed in environment pollution，genetically modified food，food allergens and etc. Government would use the principles of risk analysis to control the existence of hazards which WHO recommended. Government would establish and improve the food safety hazard identification system，and use risk assessment to analysis hazards in food safety，and enhance food safety risk management capacity and extensive risk communication in the future.
