Tourism is regarded as a new engine to local economic development and thus has been vigorously promoted by local governments. While greatly stimulating consumption,especially during national holidays,tourism has been exploited for profits,with public resources becoming the cash cow for vested interests. Too many tourist attractions are now choked with "modern historical sites",man-made landscape,tourist property developments and luxurious facilities,with natural environment destroyed,traditional culture distorted and local residents' rights violated. This paper believes that the health of China's tourism industry relies on ecological studies and ecotourism. <<
