Haze has been spreading fast in China since 2013 with an increased number of haze days, which seriously affects residents’ daily life. As an environmental problem, the haze has become a major social concern, and the government has promulgated numbers of policies and governance strategies. Therefore, the Social Survey Center of Public Opinion Research Laboratory in Shanghai Jiao Tong University investigated respondents’ perception and awareness of haze.It was found that respondents’ perception of haze was relatively high, while the knowledge level was relatively low.More than 80% of the respondents perceived the existence of the haze, and 30% of the respondents believed that the haze in their cities were serious;Urban, suburban, and rural respondents’ evaluation on the local haze phenomenon decreased in turn;and only 30% of the respondents believed they knew the formation of haze.Chinese respondents had high self-protection awareness from haze with relatively scientific prevention methods. It was suggested that for the effective governance of haze, the government needs to adjust the energy structure, reasonably plan the city structure, and strengthen the legal construction.
