In recent years，China’s environmental pollution problems occur frequently，including the oil leak incident in 2010，the PM2.5 events in 2011，the sensitive environmental projects in 2012，the massive haze event in 2013，which aroused widespread public attention and discussion.Sustainable development requires both environmental protection and economic development.To understand the ecological environment of our nation，Social Survey Center of Public Opinion Research Laboratory in Shanghai Jiao Tong University conducted a telephone survey on urban residents in 35 cities，and the results showed that residents’ overall assessment on environmental situation was not high，they believed that the four traditional pollutants，that is，air，water，solid waste，and noise，were the major cause of the current environmental pollution.In general，the residents were comparatively confident in the future improvement of the ecological environment.Based on the suggestions proposed by the respondents on environmental protection，and the views of experts and scholars，overall recommendations for the current state of the environment were presented in the last part of the paper. <<
