In 2012,the North-South peace talks in Cyprus reached an impasse and its relations with Turkey got strained. In the second half of the year, Cyprus assumed, for the first time, the rotating presidency of the European Union. Affected by the Greek sovereign debt crisis, a crisis broke out in Cyprus' banking sector, forcing it to apply to the EU for bailout. Its fiscal conditions further deteriorated and the prospect of its economy is not yet clear.
