Focusing on the goal set for the construction of the national science and technology innovation center in 2021，that is，the major task of initially becoming a science and technology innovation center with global influence，this paper summarizes and sorts out the new progress of Beijing’s science popularization capabilities. Based on the statistical data of Beijing’s popular science，the Beijing popular science development index was calculated. In 2019，the sum of the popular science index of all districts in Beijing was 35.6. The top four were Chaoyang District，Dongcheng District，Haidian District，and Xicheng District，which were 16.45，3.00，3.4 and 6.45 respectively. The contribution of urban functional expansion areas in 2019 has been greatly improved，from 43% in 2018 to 60% in 2019. The contribution of urban core areas has dropped from 46% in 2018 to 31% in 2019. Finally，the challenges and opportunities that need to be addressed in the development of science popularization during the “14th Five-Year Plan” period are expounded，and suggestions for high-quality development of science popularization in the next stage are given.
