Intelligent transportation system (ITS) is the integrated application of communications, information and control technology in transportation. After nearly 20 years of development, there are a large number of applications and industries in road traffic navigation, travel information service, electronic toll collection, traffic safety and driver assistance. With the continuous development of sensors, data collection, feature recognition, wireless broadband access and next-generation Internet, communication and information technology provide more powerful tools for intelligent transportation systems, and will greatly enhance the transport management and service capabilities. These new technologies are also basic technologies of the Internet of Things. Therefore, the Intelligent Transportation System and the Internet of things associated natural. This paper discusses the original requirements of Intelligent Transport System by reviewing the ITS Architecture firstly, and then analyzes the typical applications and status of traffic data acquisition, vehicle to infrastructure and vehicle to vehicle communications, wireless access networks on the road etc.Finally, the paper discusses how to grasp the Internet of Things in the transport sector, as well as the combination of ITS and Internet of Things.
