Faced with the changes in the demand for geoinformation science talents in the new era，and in view of the current problems and contradictions in the cultivation of geoinformation science professionals，three major cultivation concepts were proposed：“geographical qualities”，“one specialization with multiple abilities”，and “various types”. Around the three concepts，a “thick foundation and wide-calibre” talent cultivation model has gradually formed，and it has been tested in practice in the School of Geography and Remote Sensing，Guangzhou University. Practice shows that the “thick foundation，wide-calibre” talent cultivation model can fully cultivate students’ comprehensive ability，significantly improve their employment competitiveness，and enable students to find a development platform that is more suitable for them.
