Liangzi Lake represents a key backup water source of strategic significance and a shield for ecological security in the Wuhan metropolitan areas. Hubei Province has set a clear goal of establishing a national demonstration zone for lake governance in the areas surrounding Liangzi Lake. This article proposes ideas and solutions in terms of science-based demarcation of the territorial space，steady improvement in the water environment，protection and restoration of water ecology，promotion of green development across the whole region，and adoption of sound systems and mechanisms. We should focus on building a model for ecological conservation and green development around major lakes with better water quality from the perspective of the lake basin. Such a model will set the pace for promoting the development of the Yangtze River Economic Belt.
