The past quarter century witnesses the explosive growth of nonprofit sectors, especially the number of the nonprofit approved exempt by the IRS in the United States. At the same time, the whole sector desperately needs to strengthen the governance and self-regulation in order to sustain the public confidence in it.The nonprofits, with the support and guidance of the federal government, as well as the collective intelligence and innovation, undertook a series of debates, discussions, experiments and practices, gradually reached the consensus on the principles and norms regarding the structure of governance, finance, ethics, fundraising and openness, and built up the sector system. So far, a large number of successful cases and a great deal of experience have been accumulated. It has been proved that for the nonprofit, the key factors leading to the good governance are the board, accountability and transparency. The American experience is not only beneficial to the healthy development of the civil organizations in the country, but also valuable to the Chinese nonprofits in the process of restructuring the modern Chinese society.
