Building up the ICT capacity of schools constitutes the foundation and basic conditions for realizing the modernization of education and its advances by leaps and bounds. This study made a survey of the progress made in three provinces in central China concerning the building up of ICT capacity in primary and secondary schools as related to education information network development,application of ICT,and the preparation of personnel versed in ICT. With respect to the current situation of progress in the informatization of education at the stage of primary and secondary schools in these regions,it is found that in spite of the progress made,the development of relevant infrastructure and available education information resources still lags behind,and the awareness of the application of ICT in educational practice and the level attained,as well as the preparation of relevant professionals leave much to be desired. This article finally gives suggestions for improvement in these areas.
