In 2018 the General Administration of Sport of China participated in the economic census for the first time as a member of the Office of the Leading Group for the Fourth National Economic Census. The sports industry has become a key industry being monitored. It is a good opportunity to fully grasp not only the scale，structure and benefits，but also the development status，changing characteristics and existing deficiencies of the sports industry since 2014. Based on the data of the Fourth National Economic Census，this report has conducted a detailed analysis of the sports industry and its three major industries from the perspective of corporate unit and self-employed households，and number of units and employees. Combined with the data released by the National Bureau of Statistics and the General Administration of Sport of China in the past four years，this report analyzes the overall scale of the sports industry，the industrial structure and the changes in the each sector. It is found that the development of the sports industry is still unbalanced and inadequate，with small and weak market entitle，unprofessional stadium operation and management，dificiency sports associations，low-value added sports goods and weak statistical foundation of the industry. In response to the analysis conclusions，this report proposes that measures such as strengthening top-level design，strengthening regional industrial integration，increasing support for enterprises，further promoting sports reform，insisting on innovation-driven model and strengthening industrial data analysis，to promote high-quality development of the sports industry.
