Journalism school has developed solid foundations for teaching shoe-leather reporting techniques. But the practice of data journalism has been largely left out of the data journalism education. This report evaluated 113 journalism programs, and interviewed more than 50 journalists, educators, and students across the America. They offer a snapshots of the state of data journalism education in the United States and outline 5 models for teaching data journalism. This research finds that many journalism programs offer few courses in data journalism which are largely introductory, there are lack of the foundational textbooks and data journalism teachers, and graduates with data journalism skills are better equipped to succeed. This research suggests that journalism schools can collaborate with other schools, integrate alternative teaching methods, and offer computer-assisted reporting (CAR) class for students so as to improve the way future journalists will inquire into matters of public interest and communicate with their audiences.
