Urban public safety governance is an important issue for China to build well-off society and move towards urban governance modernization. As a typical representative of the new generation of information technology，big data has brought new ideas for the whole process of “pre-event”，“in-event” and “after-event” of urban public safety. In addition，to apply big data technology in urban public safety governance practices in large-scale faces the following challenges：（1）breaking through the “data island” problem；（2）solving the problem of data storage and structure；（3）preparing for security issues；（4）further enhancing data mining capabilities. Finally，some policy recommendations are mentioned to promote the application of big data technology to urban public safety governance：establishing a unified public safety big data system，enhancing unstructured data processing capabilities，strengthening data security management，developing big data mining capabilities，encouraging the diversified development of participating entities and promoting multi-sectoral collaborative governance.
