With the combination of industrial design and scientific and technological innovation，industrial design has changed from satisfying mass industrial production to cooperating with customized production. Developed countries have taken industrial design as an effective means to revitalize the manufacturing industry. With the rapid development of industrial design in China，it has become a new engine to promote the local economic development，and has formed vivid practices with different characteristics，such as science and technology，fashion，engineering，etc. By combing the connotation and extension of industrial design，this paper systematically summarizes the development characteristics of industrial design industry at home and abroad，and puts forward the breakthrough opportunities of Chinese industrial design from the perspectives of talents，technology，brand and internationalization.
