The documentary Plastic China caused a sensation across Chinese society in 2016，attracting wide public attention to and thinking about the plastic industry，especially the import of plastic. Illegal export of low-value，used plastic from developed countries into China is a perennial problem；illegal reselling and processing of imported，used plastic remain despite frequent government action against them，causing environmental problems that deserve great attention. The growing global crisis of plastic has triggered the emerging of the Break Free from Plastic as a global movement against plastic pollution. Forces in civic society have started action，which in turn has led to participation by the government in addition to companies and citizens.
