可持续发展理论，顾名思义，其核心是“持续”，而“持续”必然要涉及未来，因此，可持续发展理论所要解决的核心问题是未来的问题，并在研究和解决当前问题时着眼于对未来的影响，或者说就是研究如何处理当前与未来之间的矛盾的理论，实质上就是研究如何处理当代人与后代人利益关系的理论。立足当前，展望未来，创造美好的未来是可持续发展理论的基本思想。关于世界未来问题的研究，寻找当前经济活动对未来的影响，探索通向未来的规律，前人已经做了大量研究，为我们提供了一些宝贵的理论基础和解决问题的思路，同时，也遗留了一些有待我们思考及进一步发展与完善的问题。
