On the occasion of the 20^th anniversary of Macau’s return to its motherland，this article attempts to analyse and reflect on the development of Macau’s health care industry based on a large number of objective data and facts. It is beyond doubt that in recent years Macau has made active efforts to optimise the legal system and cooperation mechanism in the health care sector and to increase investment in education and financial resources. The legislation on health care field including the Health Professionals’ Qualification，Practice and Registration Regime，the increase in resources for disease prevention and treatment，and the enhancement of the health care quality indicators reflect three major achievements of Macau’s health care industry. In response to the rapid development of Macau，the progress of ageing society and the trend of regional cooperation，the health care industry encounters setbacks and challenges amid its achievements，for instance the long-term lack of health care manpower，insufficient promotion of health across agencies，as well as the lack of cross-regional cooperation，and all these challenges need to be actively addressed. In the next decade of the Special Administrative Region，Macau will face challenges such as the increase in health care resources，emphasis on demand for high-quality health care development environment，growth of smart health care，increase in both the breadth and depth of cross-agency cooperation，as well as promotion of cooperation in the health discipline between the government，industry，academia and the research sector. It is expected that，on the basis of their accomplishments，health care practitioners should study and properly handle various problems faced，and use the support provided by the relatively abundant public financial resources and the country’s development orientation of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Bay Area to effectively solve the deep-rooted problems that hinder development while seeking more advantages and opportunities to make a greater contribution to the city’s health care industry for the construction of Macau as a healthy city and world tourism and leisure centre.
