The Macau Special Administrative Region government prioritises the strategy of engaging the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Bay Area in its Policy Address for the fiscal year of 2019. In this article，the authors aim to provide further suggestions for deeper engagement of Macau during the cooperation of the Bay Area through investigating the role of Macau in the Area and its status quo. The blueprint for the Area will be discussed while the possible orientation of its development，the opportunities and potential challenges that might meet will be addressed. It is concluded that the role and function of Macau in the Bay Area should include being a “precise liaison agent”，regional business and service cooperation platform，and a “demonstration zone” for the successful practice of the principle of “One Country，Two Systems”. However，Macau should focus on the fragilities regarding its gap between strategy and practice of the economic and trade cooperation platform between China and Portuguese-speaking countries，the over-dependent industrial structure，and the weakness of small and medium-sized enterprises （SMEs）.The authors argue that either the trend of closer collaboration or the necessity of Macau to achieve sustainable development makes the government to consider more policies that would simulate a stronger engagement of Macau in the Bay Area. Four main suggestions are：focusing diversification and integration，fostering the economic and trade cooperation platform between China and Portuguese-speaking countries onto a higher level，stronger support for the SMEs，and allow predominant local industries to bring foster the emergence of potential industries.
