RelationsbetweenChinaandSoutheastAsiaareontherise,especiallyineconomicandpoliticalaspects。Butsuchincreasesalsocreatesocialproblems,andinsomecases,perceptionbymanySoutheastAsianstowardChina’sashaving“over⁃presence”andseeking“hegemonicambitions”intheregion。TheexamplefromthePhilippines,MalaysiaandCambodiasuggestthatitisimperativethatChina’sengagementswithSoutheastAsiaaredoneinsuchawaythatlocalpopulationsdonotbecomevictimsofChina’seconomicpresence,lestthesebecomerecipesforanti⁃Chinesesentimentsandspiralintopoliticaleffectsthatmaybedifficulttomanageregardlessofhowclosegovernments’relationshipsareontheelite-level。Afterall,ChinaandASEANneedeachothertogrowinthelongrun。AsadvisedbyStevenWong:“Chinadoesneedtocalibrateitsrelationshipbetter,buildingmoretrustandgivingmorebenefittotheregion,butthiscanonlyhappeninthecontextofanestablishedandgrowingrelationship。WhatevertestsandchallengestheASEAN-Chinarelationshipface,littleistobepracticallygainedfromadistancingfromeachother,muchlessasbandwagoningrivals。”
