Thanks to coordinated efforts in poverty alleviation and rural revitalization，in 2018，Gansu province registered robust growth in agricultural and rural economy，and for the first time witnessed a net decrease in the number of poor counties. Compared with the previous year，media coverage of agriculture，rural areas and farmers grew by over 30 percent，of which more than 70 percent were carried by social media. The public made favorable comments on Gansu’s performance on rural revitalization，its tremendous progress in agriculture and rural development over the 40 years of reform and opening up，the “menu” approach to poverty alleviation under which poor people “ordered” what assistance they needed from the government，the upgrade of modern agriculture，and the Clean and Beautiful Countryside programme to improve rural living environment，among other issues. Heated discussions were observed on jerry-built houses in Dingxi county as part of a relocation project for poverty alleviation，and a drinking water network for villages next to the Zhongshan mountain ridge of Qin’an county that had not been put into use 3 years after it was completed but suddenly began to pump water 30 hours after it was inspected by a team sent by the central government.
