Building an international presence of the yearbooks is instrumental for raising the global profile of works by Chinese academics and researchers on domestic and international issues. An international readership will also help to cement the brand’s reputation as trustworthy source of information for China scholars. After it adopted the strategy of global outreach and international collaboration more than a decade ago,the first thing Social Sciences Academic Press did to implement that strategy was translating selected yearbooks into other languages for publication overseas. What began as a pilot program executed by people with no experience in international cooperation of this kind has grown into an established field of publishing, complete with its own team of professionals, codes of conduct, editorial standards, and style guide, all of which modeled after those followed by academic publishers around the world. These efforts have helped increase the international exposure for and global status of Chinese scholars,Chinese scholarship and Chinese publishers. Much more needs to be done, however,to improve the publication of foreign-language editions of yearbooks in terms of both quantity and quality. Support from the government and other institutions will be vital to ensure the sustainability of international cooperation in yearbooks publishing.
