The reforms in institutional management and teaching practice conducted by South China University of Science and Technology received extensive attention which are guided by the ideas of "independent recruitment of new students and autonomous conferral of academic degrees", and "de-bureaucratization and de-administration, meaning to avoid intervention of institutional affairs by state authorities". There appeared a lot of controversy around the reforms, indicating the actual dilemma faced by the restructuring of the education system. Reflecting the reform practices of SCUST will bring significant inspirations to continuing higher education system reform in China.
