清末民国时期画报上刊登的野蛮人图像主要有着两种功能:一种是描绘征服与被征服的故事供读者消费;另一种是在呈现野蛮人图像的过程中召唤读者并发挥教化的作用。这些野蛮人图像表征的变化暗示了中国人“文明”观念的演变。
<<The paper holds that the barbarian images published on the pictorials in early modern China have two major functions:one is to provide conquering-and-conquered stories for readers;the other is to educate readers by interpellating them when present barbarian images on the pictorials. Further more,the author studies the evolution of the idea of Civilization and its counterpart Barbarianism behind the barbarian images on the mass media.
