The paper holds that the barbarian images published on the pictorials in early modern China have two major functions：one is to provide conquering-and-conquered stories for readers；the other is to educate readers by interpellating them when present barbarian images on the pictorials. Further more，the author studies the evolution of the idea of Civilization and its counterpart Barbarianism behind the barbarian images on the mass media.
