悌与孝相对独立,具有不同规定性又相互融通,彼此既具有差异性又具有统一性。孝反映的是子女对双亲的敬养感情和职责,它固然以亲子血缘关系为核心,但也包括儿女对一切具有亲缘关系的前辈表达爱心的伦常行为。儒家更多的是从善事兄长这一狭义上去规定“悌”,不过“悌”也有“次第”之意。孝德成为儒家伦理的基石,“悌”被视为仁的根本道德类型。孝是个人成长与发展的伦理禀赋、维系家族关系的重要情感纽带、实现治国兴邦的价值理性,有助于敦风化俗;“悌”同“孝”一道具有维系社会关系、促进社会稳定的功能。解决儒家孝悌道德同现代社会的融合与冲突、实现儒家孝悌道德的现代转换,必须返本溯源,正确审视儒家孝悌核心观念的真实义理。要全面准确评价儒家孝悌伦理的社会作用及其影响,应从普遍性与特殊性、一元性和多维性、原始性与继发性三个维度加以考量。
<<The two words “Xiao”(love and respect for Parents)and “Ti”(love and respect for elder brothers)in Confucianism,have different prescriptive and are mutual intermediated,with a gap in meaning but a unity. “Xiao” reflects the children’s respect and responsibility to their parents. Of course it takes the kinship as the core,but also it includes the filial piety to all the seniors. In Confucianism it prescribes the “Ti” from a narrow angle as a “brotherhood”,and “Ti” also has the meaning of “order” or “sequence”. Filial piety becomes the cornerstone of Confucian ethics and “Ti” is regarded as a fundamental moral benevolence. Filial piety is the ethical endowments that makes personal growth and development,and is the important emotional bond that maintains family relationships,and also it is the value rationality that achieves the governing and prosperity of the nation. “Ti” has the same function as “Xiao” that can maintain a social relationship,and promote social stability. To solve the problem of Confucian morality of filial piety with modern social integration and conflict,and to realize the modern transformation of Confucian filial piety ethics,we must trace back its sources and make a correct survey of the core idea of the true moral principles. To comprehensively and accurately evaluate the social role and its impact of the Confucian filial piety,we should appraise it from the three dimensions:its universality and particularity,monism and pluralism,its primitive nature and secondary nature.
