This study focuses on social characteristics of senior volunteers，reasons for volunteer participation，the types of volunteer activities and senior volunteers’ satisfaction levels. It is based on the data collected in urban Xiamen in 2000. The findings are discussed within the context of exchange theory. Evidence is found suggesting that social policy should address the unmet needs of senior volunteers. Some practical implications are also drawn out based on the findings.
