<<24 Chinese Canadians participated in the 2017 British Columbia provincial election, and 7 of them were successfully elected or re-elected. This marked a historical high in the number of Chinese Canadians getting elected and re-elected in the British Columbia provincial parliament. On the other hand, one Chinese Canadians was elected in two federal by-elections,and a number of them were assigned to government posts at various levels. Chinese Canadian citizens play an active role in voting and canvassing in elections, and their votes are highly valued by political parties for their profound influence in regions with a large Chinese population. Chinese communities and media devoted themselves to the education of voters, and conducted promotional campaigns designed to motivate Chinese participation in votes. However,Chinese participation in British Columbia still has a long way to go. For example,it suffers from a lack of Chinese Canadian political elites eligible to take part in elections, making it difficult for Chinese Canadians to win in regions with a relatively smaller Chinese population;most Chinese Canadian citizens are oblivious to politics, and their rate of participation in votes remained low;Chinese communities need to pay more attention to the fairness and transparency of canvassing campaigns;and discrimination against Chinese in local communities still exists. All these factors had a negative impact on the participation of Chinese Canadian elites in political elections and voting results.
