The research on the coordination between economic development and basic public service level has important theoretical and practical significance. The study used the improved entropy method and coordinated development based on the panel data of 28 prefecture-level cities in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River in 2005-2016. The degree model，the calculation and analysis of the coordinated development degree of its economic development system and basic public service system，the empirical results showed that the economic development and basic public services of the middle reaches of the Yangtze River in 2005-2016 are in the stage of sub-harmonic development；The coordinated development level presents a “pyramid” type，with many cities on the verge of imbalance. The 25 cities except Wuhan，Changsha and Nanchang belong to the economic lag（profit and loss）subtype；the city scale and the coordinated development degree have a certain correspondence. The larger the city，the higher its coordination level. It is suggested to promote the coordinated development of the urban agglomeration economy and basic public services in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River by strengthening strategic understanding，accelerating high-quality economic development，promoting classified policies，and strengthening support for small and medium-sized cities.
