<<The survey has several findings:Internet is an important tool for entertainment, online learning, and socializing in both rural and urban China. Learning is an important part in their life online. For both groups, most people experienced online events like negative information or account theft. Compared to their urban peers, rural minors are more exposed to account theft and negative comments by other users. Compared to rural schools, urban schools are more likely to offer education on internet literacy. Moreover, rural parents are more likely to ask their children for help when they use the internet. This report has several policy recommendations:Parents, schools and legislators should respect minors’ active use of the internet and provide guidance. All parties should have a clear understanding of the impact of internet use on rural and urban minors and put education on new media literacy into school curriculum. Given the differences between rural and urban areas, all parties should prioritize internet literacy education in rural areas and utilize online courses and online community to satisfy rural China’s need for cognition and help them prevent online risks.
