江苏典当业在中国典当业史上占有举足轻重的地位。起源于南朝寺院的典当业，不仅是江苏典当业的源头，同样也是中国典当业的源头。经过隋唐宋元时期的初步发展，明代江苏典当业极为发达，清代前期江苏典当业达至顶峰。江苏典当业对于地方社会事业发展和调剂平民余缺有着重要作用。
